Global Study Shows Ocean Protection Reaches Major Milestone

(MENAFN) For the first time, more than one-tenth of the world’s oceans have been officially classified as protected zones, according to a joint analysis released by the UN Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre and the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

The report places total protected marine coverage at 10.01%, marking a significant step forward for global conservation efforts, as stated by reports. Despite this progress, experts emphasize that achieving the 30% protection goal by 2030—outlined in the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework—will require safeguarding an additional expanse of ocean comparable in size to the Indian Ocean.

Recent gains have been notable, with protected marine areas expanding by around 5 million square kilometers over the past two years. In 2024, ocean and coastal protection stood at 8.6%, highlighting the pace of recent advancements.

Although countries had pledged under the Aichi Biodiversity Targets to conserve 10% of marine areas by 2020, this objective was only realized in April 2026—six years later than planned.

Findings from the Protected Planet Report 2024 indicate that most of the progress made since 2020 has occurred in marine environments. However, a large portion of these protected zones lies within national jurisdictions rather than international waters, according to reports.
